He's 31 years old. I like that we signed him, and my guess is that he can still play at a high level. But for how long?
And despite all the talk of "position-less" defenses, I am firmly convinced that it takes a true NT to effectively run the 3-4 defense. Yet it takes a unique individual to play that position. The Steelers have tried to fill that position with several players since Hampton's departure with no success...they were all playing out of position, including Benton.
We had an excellent opportunity to address the NT position for years to come in this year's draft (McDonald). Unfortunately, for some inexplicable reason, this position continues to be ignored by the team.
All the above is my meager opinion. I recognize that I'm no expert. But man...I am getting so tired of watching our defense get gashed in the run game (a major reason why we've lost our last four playoff games imo). Whatever the solution is, it's obviously not to be found in what the team's been doing since 2012.
Hopefully, the new regime proves me wrong.
