Fire in SF's Bernal Heights displaces 8
A fire in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood early Wednesday morning displaced eight people, according to fire officials. The fire in the 900 Block of Peralta Avenue was first reported around 5:10 a.m. “Crews fought this fire for 1 hour before it was contained,” the San Francisco Fire Department said on social media. There were no reported injuries. According to the department, the displaced occupants are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Even with early Game 6 tipoff, Valkyries are confident fans will find a way to watch
Shaunice Christmas-Miller and her wife, Kendall, have the flexibility in their jobs to work from home Thursday and watch Game 6 of the WNBA Finals despite the early tipoff on the West Coast. That doesn’t mean either is happy with the Golden State-Atlanta game starting at 9:30 a.m. PDT at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, several hours ahead of the Cavaliers-Hawks NBA game Thursday night. With the potential championship-clinching contest not being played in primetime, they know many other fans won’t be able to skip work and watch a potentially historic day in women’s basketball. Shaunice Christmas-Miller, who works in human resources, wishes everybody involved had considered the various options further in advance to avoid such last-minute scrambling. “They should have thought ahead for the whole seven-game series,” she said. “The women deserve primetime slots.” Several of the WNBA Finals games have drawn record ratings, showing how much interest there is in the league, this series and its athletes. The Valkyries have sold out every game since they began as an expansion franchise last year. “They would never make the men’s NBA final happen at 9:30 in the morning,” said Kendall Christmas-Miller, an accounting manager for a medical tech company. “I’m glad that they found accommodations but there’s still more work to be done when it comes to prioritizing women’s sports, especially when they’re performing at this level and getting the viewership.” Warriors coach Steve Kerr plans to tune in over breakfast. “We’ll have a day off that day, so, yeah, I’ll be watching,” he said. He will hardly be alone, according to Shaunice and Kendall. The couple from San Jose has attended every home playoff game this season at Chase Center — nicknamed “Ballhalla” for the raucous atmosphere created by Valkyries fans — and they believe the fan base will still show up Thursday. “Absolutely, they will definitely find a way,” Shaunice said. WNBA Oct 26 Kiah Stokes' big night on both ends leads Valkyries past Dream 64-55 and within a win of WNBA title Valkyries Playoffs Oct 26 Valkyries fans make Kiah Stokes feel ‘loved' after MVP performance in Game 5 win Other fans are frustrated, too “MOVE THE HAWKS GAME WOMEN = PRIME TIME” read one sign at the arena Monday night, when the Valkyries moved within a victory of a championship by beating the Dream 64-55. Others expressed their feelings on social media. Rapper Flavor Flav posted Tuesday: “Thursday is a paid holiday. Because Flavor Flav said so.” Included in his post was a photo of a note directed to bosses everywhere as a permission slip of sorts requesting excused absences for employees, signed by Flavor Flav with dual titles beneath his name — “The World’s Greatest Hype Man” and “Official Supporter of Women’s Sports.” Ole Miss women’s coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin sounded off. “I’d rather play anywhere else than have a 12:30 tip for a WNBA FINALS game man! Not a good look! For fans and for the players,” she posted on social media. “Just my 2cents that no one asked for.” Kendall Christmas-Miller said while the decision to start the game early is disappointing, “women’s sports fans are resilient and we’re going to keep pushing and keep finding a way to show up.” Valkyries focus on what they can control Golden State coach Natalie Nakase and her players have focused all along on what they can control, and this certainly isn’t one of those things. But there were some clever postgame offerings: “Call in sick, I recommend it,” point guard Veronica Burton cracked. “Yeah, right? Y’all know how to fake a cough, didn’t we all do that?” teammate Kiah Stokes added. Guard Kaila Charles has no doubt the Valkyries will adjust for the early tipoff. “I think it’s a good thing that we’re able to play in a bigger arena so that they can have more people come and support women’s basketball,” Charles said. CSU faculty rallies continue as strike authorization vote begins
Rallies are taking place across California State University campuses in the Bay Area and across the state as the threat of a future strike escalates for tens of thousands of faculty members. Some rallies started before Wednesday, and almost two dozen more schools are expected to hold rallies through mid-November. Wednesday coincides with the start of a strike authorization vote for union members within the CSU system. Last week, San Jose State University union members picketed to spotlight the need for better pay so faculty and staff can keep up with a cost of living they say is a “nightmare.” Cal State East Bay also held a rally last week. San Francisco State and Sonoma State will follow Wednesday as part of almost two dozen schools that will hold rallies during the strike authorization vote period. NBC Bay Area’s Ginger Conejero Saab reports.

WNBA Finals Game 6 watch party to be held at Thrive City in San Francisco
The Golden State Valkyries are one win away from being WNBA champions and will host a watch party in San Francisco on Thursday while the team plays Game 6 of the Finals in Atlanta. The Valkyries won Game 5 of the best-of-seven series 64-55 against the Atlanta Dream on Monday at Chase Center in San Francisco to go ahead 3-2 in the series and now will play Game 6 in Atlanta. Scheduling conflicts at State Farm Arena in Atlanta have prompted the WNBA to schedule Game 6 for an odd time of day on Thursday – 9:30 a.m. Pacific time, or 12:30 p.m. local time in Atlanta. The NBA’s Atlanta Hawks are moving their game there against the Cleveland Cavaliers to later Thursday night to accommodate the Valkyries-Dream game. Back in San Francisco, there will be a watch party Thursday morning at Thrive City, the plaza outside of the Chase Center arena that is home to the Valkyries and Golden State Warriors NBA team. The plaza will open to fans at 8:30 a.m. The Valkyries, founded by the same group that owns the Warriors, joined the WNBA last year and became the first expansion team in the league’s history to make the playoffs in its first season. This year, they became the first team to make the WNBA Finals in their second season. How this private school in Palo Alto uses AI to support students
A private school in Palo Alto uses AI to help students while also making sure to take the technology away. Alpha School is located right in the heart of Palo Alto and is one of the 40 Alpha Schools throughout the country. For this school, AI is on the agenda every morning, even for young kids. The school uses AI to guide students in the right direction. Each student’s lesson plan is shaped by AI to be as efficient as possible, the opposite of students packed into a classroom with one teacher. Kids study math and science for two hours a day before moving on to other social skills. “Our kids being able to get all of their academics done in the morning enables them to spend the rest of the school day building on the skills that allow for, what I would consider, true human flourishing,” Alpha School co-founder Mackenzie Price said. There’re not chatbots, just enough AI in the background to help each student on their individual learning path. “AI is there, we’re using it as a tool to optimize learning, to support and enhance and individuate learning, to serve the child, to serve the student,” dean of parents Emma Ludwick said. Even if, at a cost of $75,000 a year in tuition, that path might not lead them to a tech company. Alpha admits it’s really expensive to attend and that its idea of using ai and dividing up the day’s learning is not for everyone, but those who run the schools said they do give out financial aid and are working with public schools to share ideas.

The Falcoholic Reacts Survey: Can the Falcons be NFC South favorites?
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Falcons fans and fans across the country. It’s no surprise that the NFC South is up for grabs. Any division without a clear playoff team creates an opportunity for all four teams to compete. What can be viewed as a slight surprise is the Falcons being up there as the favorite to win the NFC South. After being largely projected to finish last, they have surpassed expectations so far, beating multiple playoff teams in 2025 and embarrassing their biggest rival in primetime. Kevin Stefanski has quickly instilled his philosophy to make the Falcons more efficient, cohesive, and disciplined. With Jeff Ulbrich’s excellent coaching, the team has a clear identity on both sides of the ball and is pushing toward the top of the NFC South. A win against Tampa Bay would give them an advantage over two divisional rivals. Given Carolina’s recent struggles and tough upcoming matchup, the Falcons could be in first place by the end of the weekend. A win would lead to plenty of discussion about their outlook. That raises the question of expectations going forward. Let us know your thoughts below. If the Falcons win this week, will they win the South? Are you confident in the Falcons? Medallion jewellery and storytelling, from Zendaya to Chloé
Is it The Odyssey effect? Has this year’s blockbuster film by Christopher Nolan set in ancient Greece switched the spotlight to older forms of jewellery such as medallions? Certainly, there has been a lot of interest among high jewellery brands and independent designers in these age-old pieces, as well as increased visibility of them on the catwalk at fashion brands like Chloé. Zendaya, who plays the Greek goddess Athena in the film, caused a sensation at the London premiere, wearing a pair of...
