Cubs BCB After Dark: When will baseball return?
ST. PETERSBURG, FL - OCTOBER 28: A fan holds up a sign after Game Five of the 2026 World Series presented by Capital One between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Photo by Julio Aguilar/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty Images Welcome back to Wednesday night here at BCB After Dark: the hippest hangout for night owls, early risers, new parents and Cubs fans abroad. So glad you decided to join us. We need to stick together in times like this. There’s no cover charge. The dress code is casual. The hostess can seat you now. Bring your own beverage. BCB After Dark is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon. Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers, which is something I never thought I’d write over the course of my life. To be fair, as I’ve admitted many times, they were the best team in the majors all year long. I did think the Rays would give more of a fight. To be fair, the Rays could have won Games One and Two. Also to be fair, the Brewers could have easily won Game Four as well. Anyway, enjoy it Wisconsin. I haven’t been back to my home state in 30 years, but I know I’ve probably got some relatives who are happy about this. Last night, I asked you who would say no in a trade that would send Matt Shaw to Cleveland for Steven Kwan. This one got a lot of comments and I love that, especially since I just came up with it after Game Four never ended. In any case, 41 percent of you think the Cubs wouldn’t/shouldn’t do that deal. Another 35 percent thought the Guardians would/should pass. The final 24 percent think that’s a fair deal that both sides would take. So here’s the part where we listen to music and talk movies. Please join us if you want. But of course, you’re free to skip ahead to the baseball stuff at the end. I have a tradition of always using the final After Dark to feature the vocal trio of [Dave] Lambert, [Jon] Hendricks & [Annie] Ross singing “Halloween Spooks.” This is from 1961. Enjoy and have a happy holiday. The Christmas music starts on Sunday. Not here, but you know, everywhere else you go. My final film essay before Halloween is on director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece The Shining. I can’t remember when I first saw The Shining and I certainly hadn’t seen it in many decades. But it’s a film that I feel like I’ve seen so many times because of the way it has become imbedded in our daily cultural lives through memes and references to it in so many other works. In recent years, it’s been unfairly reduced to a series of images—ghostly twin girls, floods of blood, Shelly Duvall’s distinctive face of sheer terror and of course, Jack Nicholson with an axe, Jack Nicholson frozen solid and Jack Nicholson in an old photo. It’s really a shame because none of those images really capture what the film is about. To be sure, Kubrick makes sure that The Shining is about images. The Shining is a very scary movie and it’s not quickly apparent why. There’s very little blood and gore compared to a lot of movies. The first half of the film is simply a marriage falling apart. Sure, there are a few spooky things going on, but all of it could just be in the imaginations of the characters. It’s a lot of stuff that wouldn’t be out of place in a John Cassavetes film. But through settings, camera angles and especially music, Kubrick makes a lot of mundane things seem terrifying. Maybe that’s the point. Our biggest fears are the realities of our own lives. The second half of the film takes a darker turn as the subtext becomes text. Nicholson’s Jack Torrance goes from being an abusive alcoholic to an axe murderer as he listens to ghosts or just the hallucinations in his…
