Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run that killed a 43-year-old woman just before the new year.
It happened on Reidville Drive on Dec. 28.
Police responded to the scene and found Sabrina Starkey in the road suffering from serious injuries.
She was taken to the hospital where she died.
According to Starkey’s sister, she was walking back to a hotel from her house when she was hit. She was staying at the hotel while work was being done at her home.
The driver took off from the scene.
Investigators found debris from the car nearby, including part of a bumper from a gray vehicle, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police used data from a license plate reader, which stores information about vehicles as they drive past it. The data showed only one gray vehicle, a Nissan Sentra, that had driven on Riedville Drive at the time of the accident.
The license plate came back to a woman in Waterbury. When police spoke to the woman, she told them she and her cousin had rented the vehicle to 23-year-old Dion Schontten, according to the affidavit.
Investigators determined there was probable cause that 23-year-old Dion Schontten, of Waterbury, was driving the car that hit Starkey, according to police.
Officers arrested Schontten on Wednesday at his probation appointment.
He is charged with evading responsibility, tampering with physical evidence, misconduct with a motor vehicle, and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension.
Schontten appeared in court on Thursday and was held on $100,000 bond.
