Today’s Best Advice Q&A comes from Jake Voll, president of the SS&Si Dealer Network. He shares the best advice he’s ever gotten, how he elevates young security industry pros and the person whose advice carries the most weight for him.
Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Jake Voll: “Be patient.” Early on, and frequently throughout my career, I found myself frustrated by what seemed like slow progress towards reaching my goals. I was putting in the work, building strong relationships, and growing my team, but I rarely saw the immediate results I wanted.
Whenever I felt burnt out and disappointed, Dad would tell me to be patient and to just keep doing my thing. He was right. Hard work done right does pay off but it takes time.
SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?
Voll: Learn everything you can from people smarter than you and be generous sharing what you know with others. And be kind. Given the choice, people will do business with, hire and promote the people that they know, like and trust. The biggest asset in your career will be the network of people who know, like and trust you.
SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?
Voll: There are so many people who I deeply respect and admire in this industry. If I had to pick one, I would tell up-and-comers to listen to and learn from Taylor Sears, chief operating officer of Silent Guard.
I’ve met many next generation leaders in this business but Taylor stands out because he’s absolutely obsessed with the customer experience, he’s positively impacted and shaped the company culture and he understands how to build strong partnerships with customers and vendors.
I’m proud to call him a friend and I’m thankful for the opportunity to have learned a lot from him.
