2 in custody after suspected road rage shooting near Temple University

Two people were taken into custody after a suspected road rage shooting near Temple University’s campus in North Philadelphia on Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. on 16th Street between Montgomery Avenue and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, just a block from Temple’s campus, as students were heading to class.

Sources told NBC10 that investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident involving two men who fired shots at each other. No one was injured.

Officers responded quickly to the scene, which is near a police station. Investigators shut down the block and focused on an area where multiple bullet casings were found.

The sound of gunfire startled students and neighbors.

“Honestly, I was full of doubt. I didn’t really think it was what it was. I’ve never been so close to gunshots,” Temple student Matt Anfiteatro said.

Neighbors said this isn’t the first time they’ve seen arguments escalate into violence on the block.

“I’m not surprised. Why not? Cause we had something happen on this block over the littlest things, like somebody looking at somebody. It’s not the first,” a neighbor said.

The shooting comes as Philadelphia police report a decline in gun violence across the city. According to police, shooting incidents are down nearly 5% so far this year, while the number of shooting victims has dropped by nearly 27%.

Temple University sent alerts to students following the shooting.
