The scheme issues are to be expected, especially with the in-season secondary changes. Lets review.
At the beginning of the year, the team was excited about its trio of CBs and intended to play more man to man coverage. The entire defense was geared to this dynamic.
Slay has lost a step. So has Ramsey. Thornhill is playing poorly. The Bengals in our first meeting destroyed the man coverage of our 'historic' defense.
DeShon Elliott injured. Ramsey moved to safety. Thornhill cut.
Dugger is traded for. James Pierre earning more time over Slay but still inconsistent.
There is more, and the above is not chronological, but it shows a point. These are the type of things that result in a midseason NFL defense spot dropping in cover 3 against 4 verts instead of pattern matching.
I am not giving the coaches a free pass, only saying that the shuffling players and scheme emphasis changes (less man specifically) unsurprisingly lead to vanilla coverages that got exploited in a very tight contest last week against a good Chicago team.
