Off-duty NJ police captain hurt trying to stop thieves who stole his dad's car

An off-duty Saddle Brook, New Jersey, police captain is recovering after he was injured while trying to stop a pair of car thieves, the police department said Sunday.

The incident happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday night. Police headquarters got a 911 call from the unidentified captain, stating that two people with flashlights were in the driveway of his father’s home, which sits across the street from the captain’s home.

The officer said the men were trying to steal his father’s vehicle, a 2011 gray Infiniti G37.

When the captain saw the car being backed out the driveway, he ran out of his home to try and stop the theft, according to Chief of Police John Zotollo Jr.

As the car backed out of the driveway, it hit the captain, knocking him to the ground. The thieves took off with the Infiniti. The captain’s right leg was injured, and he went to the hospital as a precaution, the chief said. He was dischaged a short time later.

Investigators have not released a description of the thieves, who were still on the loose Sunday afternoon.
