Man, 2 dogs die in NH house fire, second person flown to Boston with injuries

A man and two dogs were found dead and another person was seriously injured in a house fire in northern New Hampshire early Sunday morning, officials said.

The house in Stark was fully involved, with flames coming out of its doors and windows, state and local fire officials said. The fire isn’t considered suspicious.

The fire at the home on Montgomery Road was reported about 1:30 a.m. when a neighbor, who’d been alerted to the blaze by a woman who lived at the home, called 911, according to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office and Stark’s fire chief. A neighbor tried to get into the home but was prevented by the intensity of the flames.

The Milan and Groveton fire departments sent firefighters to the home, and the fire was brought under control after about three hours, when the bodies of the man and dogs were found inside, officials said. The woman was flown by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital.

A wood stove is believed to have led to the fire, but the investigation was continuing. The identity of the man who died was being withheld until an autopsy can be conducted Monday.

Stark is a town of about 500 people north of Mount Washington, near the border with Vermont.
