A professor at Southern Connecticut State University was seriously injured after he was struck by an e-bike last Friday, police said.
The crash happened just after 9 p.m. on Whalley Avenue near West Rock Avenue. According to police, two pedestrians were starting to cross in the marked crosswalk on Whalley Avenue.
While crossing, what appeared to be an e-bike was traveling north on Whalley Avenue and passed the vehicles stopped at the light for the crossing. Police said the bike continued through the intersection and hit one of the pedestrians.
Police said the bike’s operator fled the scene before first responders could get there.
SCSU said that the pedestrian was a longtime member of their English department, Professor Mike Shea.
“Our thoughts are with Mike and his family, and we wish him strength as he recovers. We hope the investigation provides Mike and his family with answers and clarity about what happened,” the university said in a statement.
New Haven police are investigating the crash and working to identify the bike’s operator.
