Man in critical condition after being struck in the head with a rock: Bridgeport police

Bridgeport police are investigating after a possibly homeless man was struck in the head with a large rock Wednesday morning.

Officials said the man was hit at B.J. Brown Park. First responders were called to the scene around 9:30 a.m. and found the man under a bike rack overhang.

According to officials, the man was unresponsive, covered in blood, and suffering from a severe head injury, with the rock next to him also covered in blood.

The man, unidentified, was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Bridgeport detectives believe the man was likely homeless and that he may have been sleeping when he was hit in the head.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the name of the man was not known to investigators. He’s described as Hispanic with a medium build, looking to be in his late 30s or early 40s.

“This attack is disturbing on many fronts,” said Detective Jeffrey Holtz. “This man appears to be a part of our community that is already vulnerable. It looks like he never saw this coming. We also need to find out who he is. Every day, many children, adults, and families use our parks to enjoy themselves. B.J. Brown Park is special to the city. His murder has not been forgotten. The park is supposed to be a place of peace.”

Bridgeport police are also investigating whether there is any connection to reported attacks on a homeless encampment in Milford, officials told NBC Connecticut.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kevin Cronin at (203) 581-5292.
