A Chicago Transit Authority worker was killed in a stabbing attack on Thursday afternoon at a Green Line station in West Town.
A 41-year-old CTA janitor, later identified as Julian Mobley by ATU Local 308 President Pennie McCoach, was inside the mezzanine of the Damen/Lake station, located around on the southwest corner of the North Damen Avenue and West Lake Street intersection, when he was approached by an unknown male suspect around 3 p.m., police said.
The two engaged in a “verbal altercation” that turned physical and the unidentified man pulled out a “sharp object” and stabbed the CTA worker in the neck before fleeing the scene, police said.
The worker was found unresponsible in a nearby room, police said, and was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
A police response to the incident prompted trains to bypass the station starting around 4 p.m., and CTA advised riders to “consider other service alternatives that may serve your trip, such as nearby bus routes, or using buses to other rail lines,” and suggested the no. 50 Damen bus and no. 20 Madison bus.
Aerial video from NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed police tape outside the station near the entrance on the southwest corner of Damen Avenue and Lake Street and several officers investigating in the area.
No additional information was immediately available.
