Maryland’s Emma Ghirardato had an impressive run at the W35 Las Vegas tournament that came to an end on Wednesday afternoon, as she lost in straight sets to No. 2-seed Francesca Pace in the round of 32.
Facing a challenging test against the Italian, Ghirardato struggled to counter her opponent’s dominance of the court. Pace seized pivotal moments, converting 100% of break points and winning 53.1% of total points to close out the match.
Despite Wednesday’s loss, Ghirardato leaves the tournament having had very strong showcases in her two matches.
Her tournament campaign kicked off on Monday, Oct. 5, with a straight-set victory over Ruby Cooling.
Following this win, she went on to face Ciara Harding, securing another straight-set victory. During this particular match, Ghirardato demonstrated absolute dominance on the court – winning 75% of break points (6-of-8) and 63.8% of total points (60-of-94) and managing to hold a nine-point streak during one stretch.
Though Wednesday’s matchup against Pace did not go in her favor, Ghirardato knew that regardless of the outcome the Maryland women’s tennis team had her back as she put together an impressive run in Las Vegas.
