In what felt like a do-or-die moment for the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth quarter of Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders, quarterback Patrick Mahomes launched a deep pass to wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who heroically stretched out for it and kept running down the left sideline. It was his fifth catch of the day — two of them touchdowns —and he accumulated 111 yards.
As he got up to celebrate, Thornton noticed something wrong with his left lower leg. The highlight play turned into a somber, unfortunate moment for the 26-year-old receiver having a career day. A brief replay is available here.
After some time on the field, Thornton was carted off the field following the game-changing 55-yard play. The Chiefs’ offense followed up Thornton’s effort with two touchdowns by running back Kenneth Walker, taking a 30-19 lead.
With less than two minutes to go, the team announced Thornton out with an ankle injury.
A couple of hours after the game’s conclusion, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle “that was put back into place by doctors” either during or immediately after the game. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Thornton made the plan with the team.
