With less than two weeks until training camp gets underway, the Golden State Warriors have been busy filling out the margins of their roster. On Wednesday, it was announced that the Warriors both signed and waived a pair of players: guards Chance McMillian and Deivon Smith.

Both players were signed to Exhibit 10 contracts, which are non-guaranteed training camp deals. With an Exhibit 10 contract, a player receives a small signing bonus, and also is given a financial incentive to sign with the team’s G League affiliate if they are waived. So the Warriors signing and then waiving McMillian and Smith is a way of sweetening the pot to entice the players to enter the system, rather than pursue G League opportunities with other teams.

McMillian is a local kid, as he was born and raised in Vallejo, before playing college ball at Grand Canyon University, and then transferring to Texas Tech. During the 2024-25 season, his second and final year with the Red Raiders, the righty averaged 14.2 points per game and shot 43.3% from three-point range. After going undrafted a year ago, McMillian spent the 2025-26 season with the Santa Cruz Warriors, where he averaged 17.0 points and 5.0 assists per game, while shooting 35.7% from deep. Clearly he made an impression, since the Warriors wanted to bring him back.

As for Smith, he’s a symbol of the modern era of college sports: he played five years of NCAA ball for four different universities: Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Utah, and St. Johns. His stats didn’t jump off the page at any stop, but he was a very well-rounded player who could contribute in all phases of the game. Like McMillian, Smith spent last year in the G League, though he started with the College Park Skyhawks, who are the affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks. After joining Santa Cruz midseason, Smith’s stats took off: in nine games with the Warriors, he averaged 17.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game. And, like McMillian, he certainly made an impression with the coaching staff.
