San Francisco’s recent rebound seems to be having a ripple effect on renters trying to make it in the Bay.
According to a recent Zumper rent report, San Francisco and San Jose are among the top five priciest U.S. markets, placing second and fifth, respectively.
In San Francisco, a one-bedroom apartment is now nearly $3,800 per month. San Jose’s median rent is nearly $2,700. A one-bedroom place in 15th-ranked Oakland costs $2,000.
San Francisco rents for a one-bedroom apartment rose faster than any other place in the country.
“SF is surging because there is renewed demand, likely tied to AI hiring, bringing high-income renters back, stronger return-to-office expectations, and also just improved sentiment around the city with new leadership,” Zumper spokesperson Crystal Chen said. “The silver lining is the city feels like it’s coming back.”
As for tips on managing rent, experts recommend the following:
- If you’re renting month to month, don’t rush to lock in a long-term lease now because rents may dip slightly this winter.
- If you are signing a lease, you may be able to get a break if you commit to a longer one.
- While landlords may not budge on rent, sometimes you can negotiate lower deposits or costs for added amenities like parking.
