BART back on schedule after ‘equipment problem' at Embarcadero station

BART riders experienced some scary moments on Easter Sunday.

Passengers ran from a smoking train as it arrived at Embarcadero station, which BART called an “equipment problem.”

No injuries were reported, and the issue was short-lived and resolved quickly Sunday night.

A video from a passenger waiting on the platform at Embarcadero Station shows riders hurriedly getting off the train as smoke billowed into the station.

San Francisco firefighters said they received calls about what sounded like explosions and determined there was no fire, but not before confusion and frightening moments for passengers.

“The station was almost full, there were a lot of people and out of nowhere you hear this boom, this sound,” witness Hardik Trivedi said. “There was thick smoke — the smell of something burning spread right away through the station.”

As a result, there were two delays — one at 7:40 p.m. and the other at 8:20 p.m. — affecting San Francisco line service in the Antioch, Dublin/Pleasanton, Berryessa and Richmond directions, adding to a growing list of recent BART disruptions.

NBC Bay Area’s Ginger Conejero Saab has the full report in the video above.
