As winter temperatures plummet and energy costs climb, many viewers have told NBC 5 Responds that their utility bills have risen so high, they can barely afford them.
The deep freeze, which has plunged wind chills to as low as 40 degrees below zero, may make you think twice before turning up the thermostat. However, if you’ve thought about alternative ways to heat your home, officials warn that some methods can put you and your family in danger.
The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security is reminding residents to never use an oven to heat their home. The department also warns not to bring charcoal or gas grills indoors, as they pose serious fire and carbon monoxide risks.
Space heaters can also be dangerous if used improperly. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, portable heaters are involved in at least 1,600 fires each year.
Officials recommend keeping space heaters away from curtains, furniture and bedding — and plugging them directly into a wall outlet—not an extension cord or power strip. They also urge residents to turn off space heaters before going to sleep.
