How to prepare for impending weekend winter storm

This weekend’s snowstorm will impact everyone. You’ll need to clean it off your car, shovel it off your driveway, and address any ice spots.

So, what can you do to get ready?

A snow blower is ready to go after being repaired at Wethersfield Small Engine Services. The last few days have been some of the busiest in a while as people prepare for heavy weekend snow.

“We’re getting a lot of calls. We probably had over 100 calls in the past three days, and we had to turn about 50 to 60 people away,” John Ambruso Jr., owner of Wethersfield Small Engine Services, said.

It’s a lot of work to get done, but once the snow blower is ready to go, Ambruso Jr. said there are things to keep in mind. He says, with a lot of snow, plan to go out multiple times to clear the snow, drain the fuel tank, add no-ethanol fuel when storing the blower, and keep enough shear pins for any quick fixes.

“A little preventative maintenance gets you going when you need it,” Ambruso Jr. said.

Now to maintenance for your home. At True Value Hardware in Wethersfield, they’re stocked with salt and ice melt, and a steady number of customers stop by for the necessities.

“They’re only buying ice melt or shovels,” owner Joseph Scarpantonio said.

He says people at home need three essential things for the snow: Ice melt, a good shovel that’s not chipped, and a good brush for your vehicle. He also says there’s a good method for shoveling a lot of snow.

“Keep an eye on it. Every six inches, shovel it. Ice melt is really important, because if you don’t put ice melt, you’re going to have a problem in the long term,” Scarpantonio said.

And for people who have to drive in the snow, car maintenance is crucial. At Sal Auto Sales in Hartford, they’re also staying busy working on cars that are coming in.

“Not bad. Not bad. Yes. Thank god we’re busy,” owner Salvatore Visicale said.

He pointed out three things for drivers to remember: Make sure your tires are in good shape, check your car battery, and wash road salt off under your car once the snowfall ends. He says winter is a rough time for many cars.

“With this cold, I think we get right now, the car is not easy to start,” Visicale said.
