Worcester braces for major winter storm

A major winter storm is heading toward New England, with some areas expecting to see a foot or more of snow.

In Worcester, Massachusetts, the Department of Public Works will provide an update on its plans ahead of the storm. In the past, the city has been criticized for slow or inadequate snow removal.

Resident Robert Harden raised the issue at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, saying he’s been flagging the issue of plows not clearing a wide enough area of space on his street for 21 years.

He added that it’s a problem for his neighborhood and other surrounding dead-end roads, and he regularly calls to request better cleanup so larger vehicles can fit down the street.

“If we’re paying for a service, I’m paying property taxes, I should not have to come here, again, or call, again, to get my street cleared,” he said.

City Manager Eric Batista told WGBH that the city is aware of the challenges and has been trying to improve snow removal operations, including increasing the budget and incentives for employees to work. Part of the problem, according to Batista, is that there are fewer snowplow contractors working in the area.
