Tech View: Geriatrician offers advice on how to age healthfully

With the new year approaching, many of us want to live healthier, longer lives. To learn how, I spoke with Bradley Willcox, geriatrician and director of research at the Department of Geriatric Medicine, John A. Burns School of Medicine, as well as director of Kuakini’s National Institute of Health-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence on Aging. He has spent over 30 years studying aging, including Okinawan centenarians (among the world’s longest-lived populations). His research helped identify variants of the FOXO3 “longevity gene” that greatly increase the odds of reaching age 100 with fewer diseases. Willcox focuses on improving “health span” — the years we stay healthy and functional, not just alive.
