Comment on Roethlisberger Gives Offseason Plan To Fix The Steelers by In the PNW
I agree with Ben on this topic ... the problem is that most teams get the opportunity (ie. high draft pick) to draft a potential franchise QB only when they suck. I am not sure this is the right way to go in that first round QB have a low rate of success but I can see why it is enticing to teams and fanbases. In fact, many of the Steelers' fans on this site argue for the Steelers to become horrible so they can draft high or to trade entire drafts to get a better pick (and thus injure future teams). Both seem inverse of what I believe should happen. AGAIN -- over the last 20 years less than half of the QB selected in the first round became long-term quality starters. That is a huge risk to trade away for. If already have a really good and young team and are missing that one piece ... then it is a reasonable strategy. If your team doesn't suck, and the Steelers definitely DO NOT suck, it is better to go other routes for a starting QB. The route we have seen Steelers and other teams take is drafting mid-round QB and signing other team's backups (that are leaving rookie contract). This is the strategy that was done under Cowher -- a bad year after years of this strategy (2003) gave them a better draft position that allowed them to move up to 11.
