Oakland mayor to announce move to boost police staffing

With multi-year projections of massive budget shortfalls, Oakland and the mayor are turning to private funding in a joint effort to boost the city’s police staffing.

Mayor Barbara Lee said she will announce a joint public-private partnership to help fund police Wednesday morning during a press conference at Oakland City Hall.

Last week, a new class of 14 Oakland Police Department officers graduated from the police academy.

The mayor then spoke about how OPD staffing is critically low.

The Oakland Police Officer’s Union accused the city of defunding OPD, saying only 490 officers are available when 877 are needed.

The union also called for the hiring of 387 new recruits to fill the gap.
