Frigid start today, plus what do we know about looming snowstorm this weekend?

It’s a busy couple of days, with a looming storm for the weekend.

Frigid temps

Our first order of business is trying to warm things up. Temps will recover after a frigid start, but our daytime limit will keep us in the 20s. Late into the evening, our temps will get a second wind – spiking into the mid-30s well after dark.

What to expect Wednesday night

Some light snow, mix, and rain will scoot through before midnight, and some spots may pick up a quick inch in the higher elevations. Elsewhere, it’s at most a coating.

From 40s Thursday to 20s Friday

Thursday we’ll bask in the mild 40s with sunshine. It’ll be breezy, but the arctic front will hold back until very early Friday morning.

That makes Friday the transition day with highs near 30 and gradually falling through the 20s in the afternoon. Winds will also increase, giving us wind chills in the teens by evening and single digits (above and below zero) into the night.

Weekend winter storm

Deep freeze is on both Saturday and Sunday as we struggle to maintain low and mid-teens both days.

By then, our full attention will be on the nasty winter storm moving through the Deep South. Ice and snow will bring travel to a standstill from Dallas to Raleigh. Ice will cake the landscape in major cities like Atlanta and Birmingham. Then it takes aim at the Northeast.

We’re certain that this is a big storm (perhaps 1+ FEET) for Greater DC & Baltimore, but we’re not as certain how much of that snow will reach New England.

Already we’re seeing signs of a glancing shot, which could mean 3-6” of fluffy snow in the cold air, but we’re also seeing signs that the snow could linger well into Monday, prolonged by a coastal front, another developing storm, and/or potential heavy snow banding.

Translated, this could quickly get out of hand if all these ingredients come together. For the record, we’re not tracking a storm at sea with multiple tracks and scenarios. This seems like a glancing shot or a long, dragged-out event.

Plenty to sort out in the coming days. Stay with us as we follow the evolution of this storm.
