If you’re heading to the South or the Mid-Atlantic this weekend, stay weather aware! A significant and highly impactful winter storm is possible. In fact, if all the ingredients come together, wintry weather could stretch from Texas to the Carolinas with periods of rain and freezing rain and periods of snow for the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest.
Now, a lot of things still need to come together for this wintry wallop to happen, especially the arrival of cold air from the north and deep moisture from the Eastern Pacific and the Gulf. If and when these ingredients combine, watch out! Major impacts to travel will be likely with snowy and icy roads. Airport delays will be likely. And significant power outages can’t be ruled out.
We still have some time to fine tune the forecast, but this potential storm could affect our neighbors down south from Friday through at least Sunday.
What does this all mean for us here in Boston? Well, we could potentially see the northern extent of this winter storm late Sunday into Monday with snow showers.
Temperatures this weekend will be the coldest of the season, with highs in the teens for both Saturday and Sunday and low temperatures in the single digits – and wind chill values in the negatives! So the arrival of cold air will not be a concern for us here in New England. Instead, we’ll be waiting on the arrival of the moisture to produce snow.

Right now, some of our forecast models are trending for snow to potentially move in late Sunday night through Monday. The timeline is fluid at this point though.
How much snow are we talking about? It’s still a bit early, but we could see a few inches. Check back in with your First Alert forecast for updates!
