Hartford schools to change policy on honorary diplomas for deceased students

The Hartford Board of Education will now allow schools to give honorary diplomas to the families of deceased students.

The decision comes after the family of Anitress Terry requested she receive an honorary diploma. Terry was a senior at Weaver High School in 1972 when she was struck and killed by a windblown plank that fell from a construction site at the school.

The board will revise its graduation requirements policy at a meeting on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Weaver High School, according to a news release.

Terry’s family will accept her honorary diploma on her behalf at the meeting.
