A woman made dinner reservations at San Ysidro Ranch, an upscale hotel in Montecito, Calif., during her honeymoon. However, the mood shifted when she saw how much the server charged her husband for his “regular margarita.”
In a video with over 144,000 views, TikToker Chessy (@itscosmicclementine) recalls the story she can now laugh about from the couple’s “mini-moon.”
She says she received a call from San Ysidro Ranch that it moved their outdoor dinner reservation inside due to a private event. So, the couple decided to arrive early to enjoy a drink and the property.
The server took their order, and Chessy says she asked for the blood orange margarita. Without looking at the menu for long, she says her husband asked for a “regular margarita,” implying that he wanted the unflavored version of Chessy’s order.
“She comes back with the drinks. We’re having a great time,” Chessy says. “And I gave her my card, and I said just run it because we only have like 15 minutes until our dinner reservation.”
Chessy says she couldn’t believe the total on the receipt when the server came back.
“Five minutes later, she comes back with the receipt for me to sign. I’m looking at the receipt, and I see that it’s for $305,” she says.
At first, Chessy says she thought the server brought her the wrong receipt. That’s until the server insisted that the “regular margarita” was made with Don Julio 1942, Chessy recalls.
Did The Hotel Refund Her For The $280 Margarita?
Chessy says she assured the server that it’s not her fault for the mix-up but asked if there’s any way to send the drink back. The server brought the manager, who doubled down.
“She’s like, ‘There’s nothing we can do. You ordered it,'” the TikToker recounts. Eventually, she says the manager offered to refund her for half of the drink.
Then, she says the manager changed her tune when she realized the couple has dinner reservations.
“Then she feels bad. She won’t reimburse us. But she’s like, ‘I’ll bring out some free stuff for you,'” she continues. Chessy says the server brought out some complimentary appetizers and drinks, which totaled the other half of the reimbursed drink.
The next day, Chessy says she checked her bank account and realized they didn’t refund the half promised. So, she says she emailed the general manager.
She says he asked her to jump on a phone call and recount the situation. At the end, he made things right. Chessy says he offered to refund the entire drink and apologized, saying his staff may have “lost all perspective.”
“They’re used to waiting on people like Jeff Bezos. People who are paying $10,000 a night for these cottages,” she says. “He’s like, ‘I think they forget that $280 is an insane amount for a drink.'”
Have Other Customers Argued Drink Prices?
On Reddit, others said they’ve had similar experiences with undisclosed drink prices running their tab up hundreds of dollars.
One user asked for advice in r/legaladviceofftopic after a lounge charged them $900 per tequila-based drink, later claiming it had “run out” of the cheaper alcohol.
Another recounted a situation he heard about in which a customer misheard the price of a bottle of wine.
“He told the waiter he didn’t know a lot about wine and asked for a suggestion, and the waiter suggested one that he said cost ‘thirty-seven fifty.’ The customer, who told the waiter he didn’t know much about wine, thought the waiter meant it cost $37.50, but when the bill came, it turned out it was $3750,” they wrote.
A commenter suggested that most “respectable” restaurant workers should confirm with a customer when they order an unusually expensive drink.
They shared that once they attended an event that coincided with the Super Bowl, which allowed the remaining attendees to guilt-free spend up to the venue’s minimum.”
“Those of us who did show up were told to order WHATEVER we wanted because they were going to have to pay the minimum regardless, so we might as well enjoy it,” the poster wrote.
They continued, “At the end of the meal, I ordered what was probably a $200 glass of whiskey, because why the f— not? The waiter asked twice if I knew what I was ordering. The bartender came out to confirm I knew what I was ordering.”
In the comments of Chessy’s video, some viewers shared similar slip-ups and almost-slip-ups with expensive menus.
“I almost ordered the 2000 martini that comes with a tennis bracelet in Miami,” one said.
Another shared, “I went on a date and accidentally ordered the upgraded wagyu steak it was an extra $250.”
“I did that in Disney. I thought i was ordering a $18 beer flight. it was almost $100. Thankfully they took it off the bill,” a third shared.
