The 11 Players With The Longest Point Streaks In NHL History

Oilers superstar Connor McDavid recently wrapped up the longest point streak of his career after recording at least one goal or assist in 20 consecutive games. He’s only one of around a couple of dozen players in NHL history who have hit that threshold, but it still pales in comparison to the most impressive stretches on that front.

These players are responsible for the longest point streaks in NHL history

Before we dive in, I should mention that some of the guys on this list are responsible for more than one of the longest streaks in the history of the NHL. However, I’m only going to devote an entry to their most impressive one while noting the others when applicable.

T-8. Sidney Crosby: 25 Games

There are five different players who have recorded points in exactly 25 games in a row (one of them has a few that spanned even longer), and I’m going to start with the most recent one and work my way back.

We’ll kick things off with the first of just two active players on this list: Sidney Crosby, who had a 19-game point streak in 2007 but managed to outdo himself during his sixth season with the Penguins.

Only one other player who tallied at least one point in 25 consecutive games ended up with more than Crosby did. Sid The Kid kicked it off with a two-goal performance against the Ducks on November 5th, and he scored 26 times and had 24 assists by the time it ended on December 28th (if you don’t feel like doing the math, that’s 50 points).

T-8. Brett Hull: 25 Games

Brett Hull had previously joined the 20-Game Point Streak Club with the Blues during the 1989-90 season, but he was also able to improve on that performance.

Hull helped his team get a win over the Quebec Nordiques by notching a goal and two assists on November 28, 1991, and he ended up with 31 in that first category and 15 in the second before the streak was snapped toward the end of January.

T-8. Bernie Nicholls: 25 Games

Bernie Nicholls has the distinction of being the lowest-scoring member of this quartet, but he still made plenty of contributions to the Kings’ cause during the first half of the season in 1984.

Nicholls didn’t record a single point in the first three games of the season, but he broke out of that brief slump with a goal and a couple of assists against the Capitals on October 16th. Those were the first three of the 40 points he’d have by December 10th, which is when the run that consisted of 21 goals and 19 assists came to an end.

T-8. Bryan Trottier: 25 Games

Bryan Trottier falls on the other end of the spectrum thanks to the 55 points he recorded over the course of 25 games between January 21st and March 10th in 1982.

As was the case with Crosby and Nicholls, he struck a pretty delicate balance between goals and assists with 28 of the former and 27 of the latter.

7. Patrick Kane: 26

We’ve got our second (and final) active player courtesy of Patrick Kane, who stands alone with his 26-game achievement.

Kane has had a number of impressive point streaks during his career, but none of them can touch the one that is also the longest in Blackhawks history.

The winger kicked off the season in 2015 with at least one point in his first three games, but the Flyers and the Capitals were able to keep him off the board in back-to-back contests. Kane snapped the briefest of skids with a goal on October 17th,  which ushered in a streak where he was primarily an assist merchant who finished with 26 and 14 goals before it ended on December 13th.

T-4. Paul Coffey: 28 Games

There have also been five players who’ve seen their point streak come to an end after 28-games, although only three of them will be getting a dedicated section here.

That includes Paul Coffey, who was in the midst of his when a Penguins legend who I’ll be discussing in a little bit kicked off one of his own during the 1985-86 season.

Coffey has the distinction of being the only defenseman to make this list, and you probably won’t be surprised to learn that assists also contribute to the bulk of his point total. He had two of them (and a goal) when his Oilers tied the Canucks on November 27th, 1985, and he finished on January 25th with 39 along with the 16 goals that added up to 65 points.

T-4. Guy Lafleur: 28 Games

Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur still holds the record for the most points in franchise history with 1,246, and 61 of those were secured when he set what was then an NHL record with a 28-game scoring streak in the second half of the season in 1977.

Bobby Hull had previously set the mark to beat with a 21-game stretch where he scored 35 points during the 1971-72 campaign. However, Lafleur firmly surpassed him when he kicked off the month of February with a four-point performance against the Atlanta Flames en route to finishing with 19 goals and 42 assists for 61 points in 28 games.

T-4. Steve Yzerman: 28 Games

The last member of this trio (which is actually a quintet) is Steve Yzerman, who ushered in his streak with a couple of assists against the Capitals on November 1, 1988.

He wouldn’t be held without a point until four days into the following year, and the man who spent the entirety of his Hall of Fame career with the Red Wings had 65 points (29 goals and 36 assists) during that span.

3. Mats Sundin: 30 Games

Mats Sundin is the last player here who would only be responsible for one entry if I were listing all of their streaks, but he earned a spot in impressive fashion.

The Swede spent the bulk of his career with the Maple Leafs but was still with the Nordiques when this run began in the very first game of the season in 1992. Sundin had a goal against the Sabres in Quebec’s 5-4 win, and he scored 20 more while adding 25 assists for a relatively modest 40 points in the 30-game stretch that ended on December 10th.

2. Mario Lemieux: 46 Games

The last two men on this list make multiple appearances in the Top 10, as Mario Lemieux was also responsible for the 28-game streak I mentioned when discussing Coffey’s.

However, he put that one to shame during the 1989-90 season. Lemieux had a couple of assists for the Penguins in a losing effort against the Kings on Halloween, and he wouldn’t be held scoreless until February 11th of the following year—a game he prematurely exited due to injury.

Prior to that point, he was responsible for 39 goals and 64 assists for a total of 103 points in 46 games.

1. Wayne Gretzky: 51 Games

It’s pretty hard to make a list about offensive achievements in the NHL without Wayne Gretzky’s name popping up, and you probably won’t be suprised to learn he’s at the top of this one.

The Great One had a single assist when the Oilers opened up the season against the Flames in 1983, and he contributed to the scoring in some way in 51 consecutive games while racking up 153 points with the 61 goals and 92 helpers he had before Calgary managed to shut him down on January 27th, 1984.

Gretzy is not only responsible for the longest point streak in NHL history but sits alone in third place with 39 as well as being tied for fourth (30) and sixth (28).
