Man shot by police faces charges after threatening DC club over entrance fee

A man was shot by police and faces charges after threatening a D.C.’s club’s security and driving towards the club early Sunday morning, according to police.

D.C. police responded to a report of threats at the 1800 block of New York Avenue in Northeast D.C. at 1:30 a.m. A man attempted to enter Aqua, a nightclub, with a guest and got into a dispute over an entrance fee.

Police said the man threatened club security, saying he would return with a firearm. He then left in a vehicle.

When police were interviewing club security at the scene, the man returned and drove towards the club’s entrance where the officer and security stood. Officers commanded the man to get out of the vehicle, according to police Then, the man drove in reverse and left the premises again.

Officers got in their police cruiser to search for the man. According to police, the man returned again a short time later. Officers again gave multiple commands for him to get out of the vehicle.

The man then drove towards the club’s entrance and other people surrounding the club and then drove in reverse towards a D.C. police officer, according to police. Another officer at the side of the vehicle then fired their firearm multiple times.

The man then drove away at a high speed and crashed in the 3400 block of New York Avenue in Northeast D.C., according to police. He was found conscious and breathing but suffering from multiple gun shot wounds.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. There were no other injuries on the scene, according to police.

The man has been charged for a felony assault on a police officer and more charges are pending as the investigation continues, according to police. His name was not immediately made known to the public.

Police said the involved police officers have been placed on administrative leave. The shooting is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team that handles all officer-involved shootings. The United States Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence in the case.
