Twin born on side of road before sister delivered at hospital

A baby girl born Friday morning in Maryland will have an exciting who-came-first story to tell her twin sister.

A man pulled over on busy Interstate 270 in Montgomery County when his wife went into labor. They stopped at the exit to Falls Road in Rockville.

First responders arrived just in time to help deliver a baby girl.

“Along the highway is not ideal for a delivery, but everything went very well given the circumstances we were dealing with,” master firefighter Katie Weaver said.

She said firefighters arrived with a minute to spare.

“Enough time to walk up to her and ask her a few questions,” Weaver said. “And then she started having a contraction. There’s baby.”

But mom wasn’t finished. She was having twins.

They called 911 after the first child was born.

“We delivered one baby on the highway, and they are transporting separately to your facility,” a firefighter told dispatch. “She’s had no contractions since the first birth.”

The second baby girl was born at Shady Grove Hospital. Doctors say both girls — and mom — are doing well.
