Behind the scenes of Cortina's trailer-park Olympic Village: 400 mobile homes in an Alpine valley
CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — The Winter Olympians who have signed up to stay in Cortina d’Ampezzo’s Athletes Village should not expect luxury accommodations or a cozy fire to snuggle up next to after a long day on the mountain. The temporary Village that will house up to 1,400 athletes and other team members during the Feb. 6-22 Milan Cortina Games consists of 377 rented mobile homes arranged in close proximity to one another on a humid valley floor. The Associated Press was the first international media outlet allowed in for an early look at the facility, which is in an unpopulated area about a 10-minute drive or 1-hour walk north of downtown Cortina. The rooms are simple and spartan. In exchange for amenities, though, comes close contact to the Dolomites. “It’s located in a very quiet area of Cortina, where you have the opportunity to hear the sound of the mountains, isolate yourself if you wish, concentrate if you desire, or go out for a pleasant workout,” said Fabio Saldini, the Italian government commissioner overseeing infrastructure for the games. “The beauty of a Village like this lies in the fact that everything will be removed afterward. Nothing is permanent; the environment will not return to its previous state but will be improved,” Saldini added. “This is a temporary village, but of high design.” Providing lodging for athletes is one of the most important responsibilities for Olympic organizers. It’s particularly challenging for the geographically dispersed Milan Cortina Games. Cortina’s trailer park is one of the two main Olympic villages — the other one is in Milan. Winter sports powerhouse Norway has chosen to house its skiers in hotels rather than in the official Olympic villages, according to Norwegian news agency NTB. Many other nations like the U.S. and Germany, plus host Italy, said their athletes will stay in the villages, though it’s unlikely Alpine superstars Lindsey Vonn or Mikaela Shiffrin will stay in the mobile home park in Cortina. Cortina will host women’s Alpine skiing, curling, bobsled, luge and skeleton during the games. The Village will also be essential for the Paralympics, which will be held March 6-15. “Most of the nations will use the Village — both for the living part and above all for the common areas like the gym,” Saldini said. “Even those staying outside the Village will come here.” Exposed to the elements Each trailer is divided into two rooms, with up to two people in each room. Every room has its own bathroom and shower. But open the trailer door and athletes could be met with a biting wind each morning — or they might be treated to unforgettable images of the sun lighting up and reflecting off jagged mountain peaks. Warm boots — not slippers — might be the best attire for the walk to the big cafeteria for breakfast. Anyone staying in trailers near the outskirts of the 1.4-kilometer long (nearly mile-long) Village will have a 10-minute walk to the common areas — which also include a gym, game room, offices, relaxation areas and a laundromat. A snowstorm made for blizzard-like conditions during AP’s visit in late November, without any permanent buildings to block the wind. February, though, brings more hours of sunlight to the area. The altitude at the Village area is 1,292 meters (4,239 feet) — slightly higher than in downtown Cortina. “There’s just the forest here,” said Paride Casagrande, the Village’s construction manager. “The wind is an element. But it doesn’t blow all day long every day. It depends on the day. There could be very cold days and there could be very comfortable days. But the fact remains that we’re in a natural…

New Cava locations opens up in Burlington
[This story first appeared on Boston Restaurant Talk.] A Washington, D.C.-based chain of fast-casual Mediterranean spots has opened another new location in the northern suburbs of Boston. Mass. man accused of driving 120+ mph while drunk, leading NH police on chase

Sunny and cold today before rain Sunday and a winter storm Tuesday
That was a shock to the system right! With wind chill, our temperatures have plummeted by 40 degrees in two days! It’s all thanks to those icy winds. Gusts at Boston Logan Airport nearly topped 50 mph on Friday. Today, we shake the wind. Temperatures are still colder than average. But at least we’ll have sunny skies. Our next weather maker is winding up over the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest. A foot of snow is possible in Chicago where O’Hare Airport is already in the thick of major delays. Those delays are now trickling down to Logan Airport. Check your flight status before you leave to avoid any headaches! As this disturbance heads east, it will bump into warmer air and bring us rain on Sunday. Just like last time – the rain is in and out, likely dropping less than 0.25″ for Metro Boston. The rain arrives later in the afternoon on Sunday. It comes and goes by Monday morning. So it will be sun/cloud combo for the commute. What do we know about Tuesday’s winter storm? We’ve activated a First Alert day on Tuesday for the incoming storm. We’re still ironing out the specifics, including the exact track of the storm. And that makes all the difference. If the storm wobbles to the north or south – it will mean the difference between rain and snow. The ocean temperature right now is about 50. That makes it difficult to produce snow at Logan. But for the northwest Merrimack Valley, that’s a zone where we can expect a higher tally of snow. The bottom line: Expect difficult travel on Tuesday. Keep checking back with us as we fine tune the forecast.

Trump says the U.S. will ‘very soon' take action on land to stop alleged Venezuelan drug traffickers
President Donald Trump suggested Thursday night that the U.S. could “very soon” begin targeting alleged Venezuelan drug traffickers on land, expanding operations that have so far focused on the Caribbean Sea. In Thanksgiving remarks to U.S. troops around the world, Trump thanked the Air Force’s 7th Bomb Wing for their work to “deter Venezuelan drug traffickers” and said “it’s about 85% stopped by sea … and we’ll be starting to stop them by land.” “Also, the land is easier, but that’s going to start very soon,” the president added, speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate. The comments come as Trump weighs whether to take military action against Venezuela as part of what his administration has called a campaign against drug trafficking. Senior U.S. military officials have also made recent visits to leaders in the Caribbean. For months, the president has intensified U.S. military presence in the region, ramping up pressure on Venezuela with strikes on alleged drug boats since early September. The military has carried out nearly two dozen known strikes on vessels they said were carrying drugs, killing at least 82 people. The USS Gerald R. Ford, a major aircraft carrier, arrived in the Caribbean last week, rounding out a build-up of U.S. military forces in the region that has not been seen for decades. The U.S. last week also designated the Cartel de los Soles, a group Washington alleges is run by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization. The moves have raised both expectations and concerns of a possible strike inside Venezuela. Yet even as he increases military pressure, Trump has said that he could still hold talks with Maduro, suggesting a possible diplomatic pathway to defuse the mounting tensions. “I might talk to him,” Trump said aboard Air Force One this week. “We’ll see. We’re discussing this with different staff.” Asked about the administration’s continued targeting of narcotraffickers on Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that “you can expect to see those strikes continue.” NBC News previously reported that according to current and former U.S. law enforcement and military officials as well as narcotics experts, drug cartels operating vessels in the Caribbean are mainly moving cocaine from South America to Europe — not to the U.S. During his remarks on Thursday, Trump also spoke with members of other military service groups, offering to take “any damn question you want.” Military members praised him, told stories and asked questions about his presidency, with a Marine speaking from Camp Santiago, Puerto Rico, saying that his battalion was ready to support the president’s operation against narcoterrorists.
