British woman killed by tornado in holiday spot in Portugal

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page A British woman has been killed after a tornado caused by Storm Claudia ripped through a town in Portugal. The 85-year-old, who has not been named publicly, was initially reported missing and later found dead in the wreckage of a destroyed campsite in Albufeira. Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his ‘solidarity with the family of the victim who died as a result of the storm’s passage this morning in Albufeira’. Another 28 people have been injured – including two seriously – because of shattered glass, local officials said. Those wounded were of Portuguese, Spanish and British nationalities and ranged in age from six to 85 years old. The ‘extreme wind phenomenon’ happened just after 10am today. A source for IPMA, the Portuguese meteorological institute, confirmed that radar images ‘indicate a very high probability that it was a tornado’. Tourists fled for cover as the storm tore through Hotel Eden and the nearby HolaCamp campsite, uprooting trees and flipping cars. Albufeira mayor shared pictures of the aftermath on Facebook (Picture: Rui Cristina) Footage circulating on social media shows the aftermath of the extreme winds. Rui Cristina, mayor of Albufeira, described the aftermath of the tornado as ‘truly heartbreaking’. In a post on Facebook, he said: ‘From the outset, I have been monitoring the situation caused by the windstorm that hit our municipality. ‘Today, I visited the most affected areas, including the campsite, where the scene is truly devastating. Hotel Eden and the nearby HolaCamp campsite suffered the most damage (Picture: Rui Cristina) ‘There are reports of several injuries and one fatality, an 85-year-old British national. ‘On behalf of myself and the municipality, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends. ‘We are working with all municipal resources and civil protection agencies to support the victims and restore safety and normality as quickly as possible.’ Got a story? Quality assured by Metro editors. Alan Carr’s murderous behaviour on Celebrity Traitors reduced more than a few of his co-stars to tears (Sorry Paloma). However, it wasn’t just the celebs in Claudia’s Scottish mansion who cried when the comedian won. Victoria Oldridge, whose parents founded Alan’s chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK, said her mum broke into tears when she learned he’d won. Alan donated £87,500 to the cause, which funds research into improving the diagnosis and treatment of the cancer, as well as raising awareness of the disease, which usually affects children under the age of five. Victoria told BBC Radio Lincolnshire that neither she nor her family knew that Alan – who’s been a patron of Neuroblastoma UK since 2016 – knew they were his chosen charity until it was announced during the final. ‘We weren’t privy to that information, so the excitement when he won and announced the charity, ‘Victoria said. ‘We were absolutely elated.’ His donation means the world to Neuroblastoma UK (Picture: BBC) Victoria went on to explain that Alan’s generosity will help keep ‘the legacy of the charity out there’ and that they hope it will raise awareness of the disease. She added they would be using the money to look into researching ‘kinder treatments’ for neuroblastoma and a cure. Alan became the charity’s first Patron nine years ago after meeting parents who had lost their children to neuroblastoma. Who’d have thought this unlikely Traitor could win the whole thing? (Credits: Cody Burridge/BBC/PA Wire) Since taking on the role, Alan has been an advocate for the charity, regularly fronting fundraising campaigns and raising awareness on TV. ‘As a small family unit based in Lincolnshire, we couldn’t imagine that somebody like Alan would be able to give us this platform to create the awareness,’ Victoria said. ‘I just don’t think Alan would be able to comprehend the enormous sense of gratitude we have to him for being our patron and for putting himself through all that lying and deceit.’ What charity did Alan Carr choose after winning Celebrity Traitors? Which charity did he choose? Alan Carr revealed his £87,500 prize pot will be donated to children’s cancer charity Neuroblastoma UK What is Neuroblastoma? Riccardo Calafiori returns to Arsenal as Italy issue injury update

Riccardo Calafiori is out of Italy’s final World Cup qualifier against Norway on Sunday (Getty) Riccardo Calafiori has returned to Arsenal after being ruled out of Italy’s World Cup qualifier due to a hip injury. The 23-year-old missed Italy’s 2-0 win away to Moldova on Thursday but head coach Gennaro Gattuso had hoped to have the Arsenal defender available for his side’s final World Cup qualifier against Norway on Sunday. However, Gattuso revealed on Saturday that Calafiori will not be risked for Italy’s game against Norway and the defender has now withdrawn from the squad. ‘He tried, and we thank him for the professionalism, desire, and dedication he’s shown, which is good for us as a group,’ Gattuso said. ‘We could have made him grit his teeth, but that’s not fair because he’ll have matches every three or four days.’ Your ultimate guide to the football season Metro's football newsletter: In The Mixer. Arsenal will be hoping for Calafiori to recover in time for the north London derby against Tottenham next Sunday. England boss speaks out on Man Utd wonderkid Shea Lacey after U20s goal

Shea Lacey put England Under-20s ahead against Japan on Friday (Picture: Getty Images) England Under-20s manager Ben Futcher has hailed ‘top player’ Shea Lacey after the Manchester United prospect scored in a 1-1 draw with Japan on Friday. The 18-year-old is yet to make his Red Devils debut but fans are getting very excited about the Liverpool born talent. The teenager, who plays on the wing or in a no.10 position, trained with the senior England side last month, getting a taste of what he hopes is to come. Lacey is impressing the international set-up in the youth ranks, with Futcher very pleased with what he saw from him in Doncaster on Friday night. ‘Shea’s a top player,’ said Futcher. ‘It’s been great to work with him. Your ultimate guide to the football season Metro's football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. ‘We thought he could have an impact tonight. He’s had a really good week – you saw the quality when he came on. Everyone’s been impressed with him.’ Lacey also moved up to train with Lee Carsley’s Under-21s side during this international break as he continues to make a big impression. Lacey has been catching the eye in the England age range ranks (Picture: Getty Images) Speaking after the draw with Japan, the teenager said: ‘I thought it was a good game. Japan are a good team, but we took our chance when we got it and let it slip at the end, but we’re just learning what to take from it. ‘I got a chance just before it [the goal], but I thought I took my chance well when I came on. On also working with Carsley, he added: ‘It’s good to join him. Some of the players are top players playing in the top leagues, playing every week. Hopefully you want to get the call-up permanently and stay around. ‘It’s good to play with new players and try to click with them.’ Lacey could be United’s next big star (Picture: Manchester United via Getty Images) Lacey, along with Manchester City’s Lakyle Samuel and Chelsea’s Harrison Murray-Campbell, had the chance to train with Thomas Tuchel’s men ahead of the Wales friendly last month. ‘It’s a good experience for them,’ said Futcher. ‘It is where they want to get to, so they can feel how difficult it is and how good those seniors are. It is good for them to see it, feel it and be part of it.’ Lacey may have already progressed further if it were not for significant injury setbacks already in his young career, but he appears to be over them and now on an exciting path. Lacey has already trained with United’s senior side (Picture: Getty Images) Travis Binnion, Manchester United Under-21 manager, told the Manchester Evening News: ‘Listen, everybody in the world knows about Shea Lacey. So he needs a little bit of fortune, he needs to be patient with himself and everybody else needs to be really patient with him. ‘Everybody can see – you have to be blind not to see – the talent he’s got. He’s got lots to do in his game and he knows. ‘We’re still managing him physically because if he can stay on the pitch and can train every day, I think everyone thinks he could be a top, top player.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
