Ifeanyi Ufochukwu banged his knee up in practice recently and now it looks like he’s out for the season. He hasn’t played since the Niagara game, but it’s potentially a big deal.
The 6-11 Ufochukwu accepted his role as insurance and as a practice player and he was reportedly doing a great job with the scout team in practice. That role now might go to Sebastian Wilkins, 6-8, who is redshirting.
Ufochukwu is offensively limited but aside from being useful on the scout team and behind the scenes, he presented a daily challenge for Cameron Boozer that won’t be easy to replicate. There have been a lot of people who felt that Boozer would struggle against bigger players. Well, he has been facing one in practice every day who helps him to get better.
Having a guy like that who accepts his role is a huge asset for Duke. Boozer will probably be just fine. He’s a great player obviously. However, having Ufochukwu to push him was probably really good.
On the other hand, it’s a chance for Wilkins to learn and improve and we could see the benefits from that next season.
