The state Board of Land and Natural Resources should be commended for issuing the maximum fine for a longline fishing violation in state waters (“BLNR issues max fine for longline fishing violation,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 11). Fishing is an essential part of life in Hawaii, but that does not place anyone above the law.
