Report Links Former Ravens HC John Harbaugh to NFC Playoff Team

In terms of NFL head coaching moves, this one would be seismic.

Following the Green Bay Packers blowing a 15-point fourth quarter lead in a loss to their hated NFC North rival Chicago Bears in the NFC Wild Card Round, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s job could be in jeopardy and the person who could take over would be none other than former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh was fired by the Ravens on January 6 after 18 seasons and 13 playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl win following the 2012 season.

LaFleur has just one year left on his current contract and a decision whether to extend him is due this offseason. Harbaugh, the top candidate in this year’s coaching cycle, has already said he won’t entertain interviews until next week, with the New York Giants considered the leading candidate for his services.

“Former Packers President Bob Harlan is royalty in Green Bay,” Schefter wrote on his official X account on Sunday, January 11. “His son Bryan is an agent who represents John Harbaugh. John Harbaugh has deep midwestern roots and ties. If the Packers decide they want to change head coaches, Harbaugh would be the most logical replacement.”

The failure of the Packers to close out the game against the Bears may have been the final straw for LaFleur’s time in Green Bay,” NFL reporter Jason La Canfora wrote on X. “Packers have to think long and hard about a coaching change. Gross mismanagement and John Harbaugh possibly waiting in the wings. Wouldn’t be hard to back channel that at all. Harbaugh ‘s agent’s dad a pretty legendary former Pack exec.”

Packers Will Be Super Bowl Favorites in 2026

No matter who the head coach of the Packers is in 2026, they’ll be a team that’s widely considered Super Bowl favorites,

On offense, the Packers have a young superstar quarterback in Jordan Love, a group of talented wide receivers and arguably the NFL’s best young tight end in Tucker Kraft.

On defense, the Packers have one of the NFL’s best defensive players in injured edge rusher Micah Parsons, who tore his ACL toward the end of the regular season and is just one of 2 players in NFL history with at least 12.0 sacks in each of his first 5 seasons.

Disappointment From Bears Loss Will Linger

The reaction to the loss to the Bears from Packers fans was expectedly unpleasant.

“Easily in my top 10 of worst losses I’ve seen as a Packers fan,” Green Bay fan Max wrote on X. “(Team president) Ed Policy has a big decision ahead of him whether to retain Matt LaFleur or not. This offseason will be huge for the Packers to turn things around. There have to be multiple staff and player changes.”

“The Packers have gone from a franchise that expected to championships to being terrified of losing a coach who can’t do better than the No. 7 seed and an early playoff exit,” NFL reporter Evan Massey wrote. “Truthfully, I’m disgusted with the organization.”
