The Montreal Canadiens will likely be looking to make another splash in the trade market in the coming weeks. Montreal recently acquired Phillip Danault from the Los Angeles Kings in December to help boost their forward group. The reunion with the center, however, is probably not the last significant deal for the Canadiens this season.
NHL insiders Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger recently discussed trade noise around the league in TSN’s latest Insider Trading segment. In the article, the two reporters referenced potential trades involving the Calgary Flames. The team currently sits seventh in the Pacific Division and is unlikely to make the upcoming playoffs.
LeBrun specifically named Montreal as a top suitor for Flames star Blake Coleman. “I’d say one of those pieces that continues to draw a lot of attention is Blake Coleman,” claimed LeBrun. “We’ve talked about him before, but in this sense here, I would say he’s a guy that’s pretty high up on the list of the Montreal Canadiens as they start to assemble their trade target list ahead of March 6.”
“You know, Coleman brings some of the skill set that perhaps the Habs feel they’re missing in terms of his physicality, his versatility, his leadership. He’s a two-time Stanley Cup champion and so on.”
Recent Blake Coleman Injury Unlikely to Impact Possible Montreal Canadiens Trade

GettyBlake Coleman is one of the marquee trade candidates in the NHL.
As LeBrun points out, Coleman would seemingly be a quality fit in Montreal. The forward leads his current club in goals with 13. He also has eight assists and a +10 rating after 44 games in the 2025-26 season. Along with his offensive contribution, Coleman helps out his team without the puck as well. His 110 hits on the year are second-highest on the Flames, and he previously received significant votes for the Selke Trophy throughout his career.
Nevertheless, acquiring Coleman would require some financial maneuvering for the Canadiens. The veteran carries an AAV of $4.9 million and is signed through the 2026-27 season. According to PuckPedia.com, Montreal has a current cap space of about $2.6 million. Their projected cap room for the campaign is even lower, though.
Interestingly enough, Coleman was forced to leave a matchup with the Boston Bruins on January 8 due to injury. The forward registered a TOI of just 9:55 minutes in the team’s loss on the night. Despite the setback, Flames head coach Ryan Huska has since downplayed the injury. The coach told media members after the game that Coleman was “just a little bit sore.”
Canadiens Willing to Wait to Make Potential Deal
The Canadiens will certainly have competition to secure Coleman’s signature. Montreal is one of several clubs to be linked with a move for the veteran forward. The Athletic also recently placed Coleman fourth on their updated NHL trade board. Fellow Flames star Rasmus Andersson was one spot ahead of Coleman in the list.
Although Montreal apparently wants Coleman, fans may have to be patient for any news regarding a potential trade. According to LeBrun, the Canadiens could wait until after the Olympic break to make a move. Due to the winter games, the NHL will pause from February 5 through February 25. This would leave Montreal with a short window to complete a deal before the trade deadline on March 6.
