A person was killed and 10 people were sent to hospitals Sunday morning from a collision on the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights, where a big rig crashed into multiple vehicles, authorities said.
The crash on the southbound freeway, just south of 4th Street, occurred around 5:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
At least one vehicle caught fire and a physical rescue was requested, said Jennifer Middleton of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The CHP shut down all southbound lanes at 5:22 a.m. for at least two to three hours and confirmed that nine vehicles sustained major front-end damage. It was unclear if the big rig was loaded.
A total of 15 people were assessed, with 10 patients transported to local hospitals, Middleton said.
Paramedics transported some of the injured — with moderate injuries — to Adventist Health White Memorial hospital, the CHP said.
No other immediate information was available.
