Comment on Google is Rolling out Photorealistic ‘Likeness’ Avatars on Android XR to Compete with Apple’s ‘Personas’ by Christian Schildwaechter
Bigscreen had a pretty good excuse because they needed an accurate 3D scan of the user's face to create a custom facial interface, and getting it wrong would seriously impact comfort. They relied on the depths sensor higher end iPhones have featured on the front for Face ID since 2017, which are all calibrated to deliver the exact same dimensions, something that is much harder to do with photogrammetry lacking an absolute size reference. AFAIK none of the Pixel phones feature a front depth sensor, so they have to rely on reconstructing the shape of the face/skull from pictures only, which would work on any phone. And that scan being somewhat off is much less of an issue for showing a Likeness avatar compared to a physical pad needing to match a face. I don't intend to buy any AndroidXR HMD anytime soon. But if I did, my 2023 Google Pixel 7a running the latest Android 16 from Google itself would apparently be too old, which is kind of ridiculous, given that the newer ones don't feature any special new sensors that might justify the limitation. And I fully agree, Google has a special talent for creating cool tech for VR and then bork it up by making stupid, limiting decisions.
