Firefighter among 4 hurt as fire devours Staten Island home

A fuel-fed fire overtook a house in Staten Island’s Mariners Harbor early Wednesday, spewing smoke into the pre-dawn sky as firefighters battled the flames, according to officials.

The FDNY says it got a call about the fire at Grandview Avenue and Arlington Place around 5:30 a.m. Units arrived in about 4 minutes, officials said. They encountered a vehicle, a truck and a fuel truck directly feeding fuel into the house, with heavy fire in the first floor, basement and attic. Two propane tanks were involved.

The fire eventually escalated to three alarms. It was under control in about 90 minutes.

The homeowner was treated at the scene and released. Fire officials say one firefighter was taken to a hospital with symptoms of smoke inhalation and exhaustion. Two other civilians suffered minor injuries.

Chopper 4 showed a large emergency response at the scene. It’s not clear what caused the fire.

Investigators say clutter on the second floor and in the attic complicated firefighting efforts.
