Editorial: Mayor Wright gets needed upgrades

The Mayor Wright Homes complex in Kalihi, built in 1953, is one of the oldest state-run public housing projects in Hawaii and one of the biggest. It holds 364 low-income apartments in low-rise buildings on its 15 acres. But soon, the new housing development replacing it will dwarf the old complex — and that’s a good thing. The redevelopment plan calls for 10 high-rises and 2,448 new homes on the site, and a milestone in the process came late last month when the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corp. (HHFDC) board preliminarily agreed to approve about $220 million in public funding for the project.
