Ryan Poles is not a proficient judge of NFL talent, character, and production. He's had a few successful picks but by and large, his additions to the roster have hurt more than they've helped. Caleb didn't even want to come here due to the culture of tolerating failure that McCaskey allowed under his "leadership." And he would be another addition to McCaskey's QB ash heap of ruined talent without Ben Johnson.
There's no credit given to Poles or McCaskey for Johnson's position. Ben wanted to come here because he knew he could change the trajectory of the entire organization... And he has. But it was only because he exacted concessions from ownership about control over his staff and his players. As Poles and McCaskey have receded, his influence has put the Bears in charge of their own destiny. He would not have signed if Georgie was the recalcitrant simpleton he's always been. So credit where it's due... I guess George finally realized he was the one steering the plane into the mountain over and over again before he finally said, "alright I get it, I'm not a pilot."
