Alexandria Fire responded to the 250 block of S. Pickett Street around 9 a.m., where a large plume of smoke and fire were emerging from the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. It appears to have started on the balcony and subsequently spread throughout the building.
The fire has since been extinguished and firefighting crews are doing overhaul. This is the final stage of firefighting operations, where crews search for smoldering embers and eliminate lingering smoke or fire in open spaces.
