Could problems at a Joliet refinery send gas prices even higher?

Filling up your car could cost more across the Chicago area and beyond as problems at a Joliet refinery threaten to push gas prices even higher.

ExxonMobil said it was working to resolve the issue at the facility but did not provide further details.

Bloomberg reported the problem could affect gas prices across the Midwest, but did not estimate how much prices could rise.

According to the business news outlet, bulk gasoline prices surged following the refinery upset, threatening to squeeze consumers in the battleground states of Michigan and Ohio less than two weeks before key midterm elections.

In Illinois, gas averaged $4.81 per gallon on Friday, up 15 cents from Thursday, according to AAA.

Meanwhile, the average price jumped 12 cents to $3.98 per gallon in Indiana.

In Wisconsin, the average price was $4.32 per gallon, an 11-cent increase from Thursday.

Bloomberg reported Midwest gasoline inventories were already at a record low for this time of year, according to Energy Information Administration data. Nationally, gasoline stockpiles shrank by 3 million barrels last week.
