Cairo Santos made Chicago Bears fans groan when he missed a field goal Thursday, but he made up for that miss in a massive way.
Santos had doinked a 53-yard field goal attempt off the upright in the fourth quarter of the Bears’ game against the New England Patriots at Soldier Field, so fans could be forgiven for being skeptical when he was lining up for a 58-yard field goal in the late stages of the contest.
After all, Santos’ career high prior to that kick was 55 yards, and if he missed, the Patriots would be within striking distance of the end zone with plenty of time on the clock and only trailing by six points.
Instead, Santos went and made history.
According to Pro Football Reference’s Stathead tool, the 58-yard field goal by Santos is now tied for the longest in the history of the Chicago Bears, matching a 58-yard boot by Robbie Gould during the 2013 season.
The field goal is also the third-longest ever made at Soldier Field, and it gave the Bears a massive primetime win as they moved to 5-2 on the season.
Now, Santos and the Bears will have plenty of time to rest, as they will next play on Monday, November 2 against the Seattle Seahawks in the Pacific Northwest.
