Cubs’ John Mallee A Candidate for Mets’ Hitting Coach

The Mets don’t have a ton of work to do on the coaching staff this offseason, with Andy Green locked in at the helm and most of the coaches returning to their roles. But the Mets didn’t renew the contract of Jeff Albert, their director of MLB hitting, and they’re looking to add another voice to the dugout.

Previously, it was reported that old friend Kevin Long is a candidate—the Mets were scheduled to speak to him Tuesday. Now, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports that Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee is also a candidate.

Mallee has spent every season but two since 2010 as an MLB hitting coach in some capacity. He also has another decade and a half as a minor-league hitting coach.

He’s been with the Cubs since 2024 as an assistant and has received credit for helping Pete Crow-Armstrong unlock the consistency he’s needed to reach MVP status (though still unofficial) in 2026. The Cubs also had the highest-producing offense in baseball this year. He previously was the lead hitting coach for the Cubs when they won the World Series in 2016.

Whoever is hired, it’s still not clear if this is someone who would join the staff of Troy Snitker, the current Mets hitting coach, or if they’d be hired above him.
