Multiple people are dead, including the shooter, after a shooting today at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the preliminary investigation told NBC News.

The ages of the people killed were not immediately known.

Police had previously said there were multiple victims, including at least two who were taken to a local hospital. Their conditions were not available.

It is not known whether the victim is a student or an adult, the officials said.

Bend police spokesperson Sheila Miller said two people were transported to a hospital. The conditions of those injured were not immediately known, as well as whether there were additional casualties.

“We don’t have a number at this point. We know children are among the victims,” Communications Manager for the Bend Police Department Sheila Miller said.

Authorities received a call about a shot fired into a car outside Silver Rail Elementary at 12:59 p.m. and arrived on scene within minutes. Further 911 calls came from inside the school, she said.

The attacker was shot and went down inside the school soon after police arrived, she said.

It was not immediately clear if it was by police, a bystander or self-inflicted.

Agents from the FBI’s Portland bureau are at the scene assisting local authorities in the investigation, FBI Director Kash Patel said on X.

“We will make every resource they need available,” he said.

At least one agent was on the scene at Silver Rail Elementary this afternoon, and more are on the way.

Federal law enforcement officials say the Oregon State Police may become the lead agency in the investigation.

Gov. Tina Kotek said she is “closely monitoring the situation at Silver Rail Elementary.”

“I am grateful to the first responders who are on the scene. I will share as I learn more,” she said.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said the district is “stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy.”

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence,” Cook said today. “No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing.”

“Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders,” he added.

Spokespeople for the city and police department did not immediately return emails seeking comment from The Associated Press.

Ron Wyden, the U.S. Senator from Oregon, said in a post on X, “My heart is with the victims of today’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and their loved ones now facing the consequences of another school shooting in America.”

“Once again we must ask how many schools must be shot up before Republicans agree to act to curb gun violence,” he added.

Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (OR-05) also posted a statement on X saying, “My heart and my prayers and everything else I got is with the families at Silver Rail Elementary.”

Silver Rail Elementary was under lockdown, the Bend-La Pine school district wrote on Facebook.

“We’re in the process at this time of going room by room and evacuating each of the people who are in that school. … This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating,” Miller said, pausing to control her emotions.

The school in Bend, which is more than 100 miles southeast of Portland, had 459 enrolled students as of last year, according to the Oregon Department of Education. The school serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
