A smoke shop was filled with flames overnight as, officials said, crews worked to stop a fire at a business in Stratford, New Jersey, early Thursday.
According to the Sommerdale Fire Department, crews were called to a fire reported in a strip mall along the 600 block of North White Horse Pike in Stratford, New Jersey, at about 1:12 a.m.
Here, officials said, firefighters found flames tearing through a Tobacco Outlet store.
However, crews were able to contain the fire to the tobacco shop and, officials said, no one was injured in this incident.
Michael Berdine, who lives across the road from where the incident occurred, said he saw police in the area and thought someone was being pulled over before he saw flames inside the strip mall.
“As I was standing at the door, all of a sudden, I see a big fire going on inside of the tobacco shop,” he said. “And, as I was standing there, the whole front glass blew out.”
When the shattered glass fell, Berdine said, he could see into the shop.
“There was just this big fire inside,” he said.
Officials said that the fire is believed to have been started inside the tobacco shop where it was contained, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The shop, officials said, suffered significant damage from the fire, smoke and water used to extinguish the flames.
