Driver killed when SUV crashes into Kensington U-Haul building

The driver of an SUV was killed when, officials said, their vehicle crashed into a U-Haul building in Philadelphia’s Kensington community on Thursday morning.

NBC10’s SkyForce 10 captured footage of crews working on the scene along the 300 block of East Lehigh Avenue in Kensington at about 5:50 a.m. on Thursday. A dark-colored 2014 Dodge Journey could be seen after it crashed through a wall of the building.

The vehicle seemed to have rammed nearly completely through a wall of the building after the driver drove the SUV off the roadway.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC10 shows the vehicle heading straight for the building before the structure burst into flames on Thursday morning.

In an early morning update, officials said the driver of the vehicle was killed in this collision.

However, police did not immediately provide further information on the victim in this crash.

First responders were at the scene at about 5:16 a.m., officials said, after the crash caused a fire inside the business when a gas line was struck.

Police said the driver was headed eastbound on Lehigh Avenue before crashing into the building.

That fire was placed under control by about 5:49 a.m., officials said.

Also, officials said, the driver was pronounced by first responders at the scene at about 5:40 a.m.

NBC10 is working to learn more.
