Philadelphia has ranked as the most walkable city in the United States, the best city for street art and even the best city for NFL fans — however, a new study found that the driving experience is not among the city’s strongest qualities.
A new analysis by WalletHub ranked Philadelphia as the worst city to drive in the United States for the second year in a row, while Scottsdale, Arizona, was found to be the best city for drivers. Overall, Philadelphia received a score of 36.35. For comparison, Scottsdale received a score of 63.3.
To determine the best and worst cities to drive in, WalletHub experts compared 100 of the largest U.S. cities across 30 key indicators of driver-friendliness, ranging from gas prices to the number of hours drivers spend in traffic.
“Car prices have gone up significantly over the past few years, and gas remains expensive going into the summer travel season. Living in one of the best cities to drive in can make owning and maintaining a car much cheaper. However, costs aren’t the only factors that matter; the best cities for drivers also minimize commute times and traffic congestion, have accident rates well below the national average and keep their roads in good condition,” Chip Lupo, an analyst for WalletHub, said.
The study found that Philadelphia has the highest car theft rate among the 100 cities analyzed. It also ranked as the city with the highest parking rates and ranked poorly for the number of hours drivers spend in traffic.
