A week ago, your Iowa Hawkeyes were a plucky 3-0 team staring down the barrel of the hardest three-game stretch of their season and perhaps of anyone in the country. They were underdogs on the road in the Big House and the prospect of starting the conference slate 0-3 looked real.

Then Hank Brown hit Reece Vander Zee on a back shoulder fade with no time on the clock, Iowa walked out of the Big House with a 20-19 win and everything changed. The Hawkeyes jumped to #14 in both polls. College GameDay set up shop on the Pentacrest for the first time in 20 years. And a fanbase that has spent a decade bracing for the other shoe started asking a different question entirely.

So that’s exactly what we asked in this week’s Reacts poll: is Iowa a playoff caliber team? A whopping 72% of you said yes.

That’s a bold stance for a fanbase whose team is a two-touchdown underdog in its own stadium this afternoon. So let’s do the math on it.

What the Folks in the Desert Think

Start with today. Ohio State comes to Kinnick as a 14.5-point favorite with an over/under of 45.5 according to FanDuel Sportsbook, good for an implied final score of ~30-15. The moneyline has Iowa at +470, which translates to about a 17.5% chance of winning. At home. After the Michigan moment. The market is not sentimental.

The futures tell the same story. Iowa is at +450 to make the College Football Playoff, an 18% implied probability. ESPN’s FPI is slightly kinder at 22.9%, though it’s worth noting that number nearly doubled from 13.9% after the Michigan win. However you slice it, the gap between Vegas and the fanbase is canyon-esque.

But just because Vegas thinks it’s a long shot doesn’t mean there’s not some money to be made betting on the good guys here. After all, these folks certainly weren’t high on the Hawks a week ago and they gave the Hawkeyes no shot against the Buckeyes nine years ago.

The Schedule Says the Path is Real

Today is the only game left on the schedule where Iowa won’t be favored, or close to it. After Ohio State, the remaining slate reads at Washington on a short Friday turnaround, the bye, at Minnesota, Wisconsin at home, at Northwestern, Purdue at home, at Illinois and Nebraska on Black Friday. None of those teams are currently ranked.

Washington on the road on a short week will be a real test and we’ll know more about them after today, but to-date they’ve looked very beatable. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois have all shown glimpses, but also meaningful cracks. Purdue is 1-3. The scariest name on the list might be the one at the very end: Nebraska is unbeaten and that Black Friday date in Iowa City suddenly looks like it could matter a great deal.

Iowa’s schedule is difficult over the next week, but after today things can begin snowballing. The Hawkeyes just need to keep today close to potentially earn some credit in the committee room.

What It Actually Takes

Two years into the 12-team playoff, the Big Ten math is remarkably clean. Every Big Ten team that finished the regular season 10-2 or better has made the field – seven for seven across 2024 and 2025. And every 9-3 team has missed, with USC and Michigan both left standing outside last December.

So there’s your number. Iowa is 4-0 with eight to play. Go 6-2 the rest of the way and history says the Hawkeyes are in. That means even a loss today leaves the path intact with a potential mulligan still on the board.

The key will be threading the needle a bit. Getting absolutely blown out at home will knock the shine off that Michigan win. Losing again to an unranked opponent will do more damage in the rankings, but with all the conference’s top teams squaring off against each other, it’s still plausible Iowa would end up in the Big Ten Championship Game at 10-2 and at risk of taking a third loss.

The title game might seem like a longshot, but consider the rest of the conference. Indiana, Ohio State and USC all play a round-robin. The Buckeyes also get Oregon and Michigan. Of the conference’s top-8 teams, Iowa is the only one without a ranked opponent remaining on the schedule after today and the rest have at least two.

The Bottom Line

Win today and Iowa is 5-0 with a signature win and a legitimate seat at the big-boy table. Lose a close one and the committee math barely moves – the schedule softens immediately and 10-2 remains squarely on the table. The only outcome that really dents the dream is the kind of afternoon the 2017 Buckeyes had at Kinnick, pointed the other direction.

Which brings us back to the 72%. The market says that number is wildly optimistic. The precedent says it only requires Iowa to be exactly what it has looked like for four weeks, six more times in eight tries. Here’s hoping nearly three-quarters of the fanbase knows something the sports books don’t, starting at 2:30pm CT this afternoon.
